Beginning in the 5th grade and continuing through the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, students, parents and educators are asked to sign an Eastern Promise Academic Momentum Compact. This compact affirms the students’ desire to work toward developing academic and personal habits that will prepare them for post-secondary education or training. It also affirms the school and parental support of the student’s aspirations.
In most elementary classrooms College & Career Readiness units are based on each individual teachers experiences and resources and are not consistent throughout the school. The Academic Momentum Curriculum builds each year 5th – 8th grades, providing a smooth transition of information.
This plan helps students look back over the year and to the future to begin shaping their personal, academic and career goals for 5th – 9th grades. Challenges and support systems are also identified.
Research has found that when students who don’t identify with college, or who think they’re not college material are exposed to just a college day it does very little to promote college going aspirations. But, when it is combined with other strategies, like the Academic Momentum, that connect their interests and skills with going to college it provides helpful reinforcement and validation from their role models and peers.
All elementary schools participating in the Academic Momentum program are required to take their 5th grade students to a 4-year university campus. This gives the student an exciting opportunity to see what a college campus looks and feels like. In the 7th grade, middle schools are required to take students on a field trip to a Community College campus. With this experience they may begin comparing the similarities and differences between community colleges, trade programs and 4-year universities. Each school district is responsible for paying for the field trips.
When a student:
Upon graduation from high school and acceptance to EOU, all students who achieve the above standards are promised an EOU Incentive Scholarship of $500.00 per term.
